Wow! And I thought you had to spend money to get a membership at an exercise place. I have only spent that type of money once...of course, I didn't go but two or three times and then quit.

It is such a waste of money, in my opinion. It is much better to use some of the strategies suggested in this excellent article to get and stay fit.

Very nicely done. I never had too much problem staying in shape when I was younger, but now that I'm over 50, it's a whole 'nother story! I've been a bit of a couch potato lately, spending too much time on the computer. With your suggestions, maybe I can shed that extra 20 pounds!

I love this list, too. I would add hiking as an activity. Depending on where you live, the elevation and terrain of a hiking trail, you may not need fancy gear. Sometimes a pair of sneakers will do. If you're not sure, check with your local outdoor outfitter for safety information. Hiking is a great fitness activity, gets you outside enjoying some fresh air and it's fun. It's also not necessary to summit a 4,000 ft or higher mountain to be considered a hike. A hike is what you make it. Great family event, too.

I also recommend checking out itunes. There are lots of free fitness and yoga podcasts available to do at home or on the road.

Jan,

What a comprehensive list of no-cost ways to get (or stay) fit! Thanks for sharing these! I definitely need to get back into a fitness routine now that I'm spending so much of my time working at the computer as a freelance writer/blogger!

Back when I was a (re-entry) college student (late 2005 to early 2007), riding buses to school and walking all over campus and all over town--or when I worked outside the home and rode the bus to work--it was less important for me to have a regular fitness routine than it is now that I'm working from home. (For part of that time I also had a set of regular stretching, limbering, and range-of-motion exercises, which eventually fell by the wayside.) So I appreciate this input and encouragement to make 2008 a year of greater physical fitness by developing a regular exercise regimen.

Thanks for a great post--and a great blog!

Best wishes in the New Year!
Jeanne
